Historic Brentsville Courthouse On A Sunday Afternoon

The Brentsville Courthouse was built  in 1822 and served as the Prince William County Courthouse until 1894 when it was moved to Manassas where it remains today.  Brentsville was the fourth county courthouse - the first was in Woodbridge, the second in Cedar Run and the third in Dumfries.  Brentsville was chosen for two reasons

  • The population was moving west
  • It was in the geographic center of Prince William County

It served as the county courthouse  during the Civil War, but after the seat of county government moved to Manassas the Brentsville site saw duty as

  • The village school
  • Community Center
  • Brentsville District polling place
  • Prince William County Park Authority Headquarters

The Prince William County Historical Preservation Division maintains the 25 acre site.  The grounds are open daily during daylight hours and the courthouse is open on weekends.  There is a self guided tour and a nature trail that winds down to the waters of Broad Run.

I am in one of the pictures walking back from a visit to the execution site.  The scaffold was erected and dissembled after each of the 13 executions carried out there.  Also, the courthouse is cooled geothermally.  There are eight 300 foot wells where the water remains at a constant 55 degrees all year long.  The water is the coolant in the system to air condition the building in the summer months.

Also see RIPPON LODGE for an even older Prince William County treasure.  This is one of the numerous reports I prepare  featuring historic Prince William County sites that provide informative educational information in addition to being pleasant, inexpensive day trips.

Are You Ready? The Hardware Stores Are

It won't be too many more weeks before the leaves will begin to change colors and then they're on the ground.  If your rake looks like the one above you may want to consider an investment in a new one.

Fall is an especially colorful time of the year.  If you are fortunate enough to live in subdivisions such as Kings Park, Orange Hunt Estates, Daventry, Saratoga and Newington Forest you don't have to travel far to enjoy the vibrant Fall colors - they are all around you.

It's the time of years when kids and dogs love to run through a pile of leaves or the family visits a pumpkin patch.  Hayrides and Halloween parties are great Fall activities.

However, back to the real world - leaf raking.  We have a perfectly good and powerful leaf blower which my husband refuses to use.  He enjoys raking the leaves onto an old sheet and hauling them off to the woods behind our home. For a new rake, though

If you have a rake, but need to buy a yard with leaves so you can enjoy the season contact Karen and Art by Email or call us at 703-562-1532.  Put our  record of customer service, real estate experience and state-of-the-art technology to work for you in Alexandria, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Prince William County, Stafford County or the entire Northern Virginia Area.

Lake Ridge Commons - One Of Our Three Shopping Centers

TACKETTS Mill was the first of the three Lake Ridge shopping centers - it is at the entrance to the subdivision.  As the community grew to the west a second shopping center, LAKE RIDGE COMMONS was added.  It is the smallest of the three and can be found at Old Bridge Road and Hedges Run.

However, its popularity is assured by the fact  it has a STARBUCKS.  Of course it has the usual neighborhood complement of super market, bank, cleaners, barber shop/hairdresser, service service station, ice cream store and pizzeria.

Lake Ridge VA Doesn't Have An Elm Street

Arthur and I have been a real estate team for 32 (Oops - we're working on 33) years and I always know I can count on the thoroughness of his work just as he did on this post about our hometown - Lake Ridge.  Karen Kruschka

Via Art Kruschka - Fairfax Prince William Stafford County VA Real Estate Service:

There are 5,233 Elm Streets in the U.S. and not one of them is in Lake Ridge.  We have over 7,500 residences, approximately 30,000 residents and NO MAYOR

However, Lake Ridge has eveything you would expect to find in a typical American small town with a mayor.

  • Elementary schools, middle school and senior high school
  • Three shopping centers
  • Public transportation
  • Churches of many denominations
  • Fire and rescue service
  • US Post Office annex
  • Restaurants to please every taste, every age group and every pocketbook
  • More miles of shoreline than any other Prince William County community
  • Public golf course
  • Public boat launch facilities
  • Five pools, community centers, gigantic playground, tot lots and a Sprayground (picture below)
  • Commercial office space
  • Medical and dental offices
  • Local parades
  • Public storage facilities
  • Service stations
  • Senior citizen residences
  • Rental apartments
  • Town homes
  • Detached homes
  • Condominiums
  • Large lots where you can garden, play games, fence it in for your dog, etc
  • Common areas loaded with trees behind the homes and throughout the community.
  • Tree lined, wide streets
  • Boy and Girl Scout troops
  • Rotary anf Lions clubs
  • Garden club, Toastmasters, Runners club, etc, etc.
  • Private schools
  • Day Care centers

I'm certain there are some I have missed, but I think you get the picture - Lake Ridge is the "home town" many of us remember as kids and is what we want for our kids.

I can only think of 3 reasons to leave Lake Ridge

  • Go to work (unless your office is in Lake Ridge)
  • Visit people who aren't fortunate enough to live here
  • Move to another small town with an Elm Street

Kings Park Springfield Fairfax County VA Information

Kings Park, located just west of the Capital Beltway (I-495) off Braddock Road, is a popular community of 1,100 homes that were built in the 60s. There are five basic models - two colonials, one split foyer, one cape cod and one rambler.  They are Richmarr homes who was the one of the premier Springfield developer/builders during the period.  Of course, over time, many of the homes have been refurbished and had additions added.  This gives the community a uniqueness and character that can only be developed over a rather lengthy period of tine.

Metrobus Route 17 operates in Kings Park with service to the Pentagon Bus Terminal

George Mason University is a few miles west on Braddock Road.

Kings Park is in the Lake Braddock Secondary School Pyramid

Springfield VA - Commuting Crossroads Of Northern Virginia

There are three primary concerns for people who relocate to the National Capital Area and decide to locate in Northern Virginia.

  • The first concern is the availability and cost of housing.
  • For those with children school quality is the second area of interest.  It should also be an area of interest for people without children since school quality has an impact on resale value.
  • Commuting is the third area that is considered by a relocatee

Springfield is Commuting Central for many North Virginia residents especially if you live east of Burke in Fairfax County and south of the Mount Vernon area of Fairfax County and into eastern Prince William County.

Both METRORAIL, VIRGINIA RAILWAY EXPRESS and PRTC METRO DIRECT BUSES converge at the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station

PRTC METRO DIRECT is a unique service with buses that operate both north and south between Prince William County and the Franconia-Springfield Metrorail station facilitating commuting for those people who need more than bus service to the Pentagon or rail and bus service to Washington, D.C.

Carpools, vanpools and individual drivers rely on the Springfield Interchange for routing them north, south, east and west.

It is not at all uncommon for friends, associates or Realtors® to tell you it takes "x minutes" to commute from here to there,  Beware the validity of the information unless it includes "approximately", because time frames can change here with what would be a minor distraction in other parts of the country.

Planning to relocate to Northern Virginia?  You should consult a Realtor® who thoroughly understands the commuting challenges of Northern Virginia. Contact Karen and Art by Email or call us at 703-562-1532.  Put our  record of customer service, real estate experience and state-of-the-art technology to work for you in Alexandria, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Prince William County, Stafford County or the entire Northern Virginia Area.
