The newest and most comprehensive commuting option available to Woodbridge and Dumfries residents is the Virginia Railway Express.  There are 3 stations currently operating with a 4th planned.  The 3 are Woodbridge, Rippon and Quantico.

The most important feature of this service is that it PROVIDES CONNECTIONS TO EVERY ROUTE IN THE METRORAIL SYSTEM.

Franconia = Blue Line

Alexandria = Blue and Yellow Lines

L'Enfant Plaza = Yellow, Blue, Green, Orange Lines

Union Station = Red Line

You can travel anywhere in the Metro System even though we do not have subway system service in Woodbridge, Dumfries or Prince William County.

The Woodbridge area of Prince William County has numerous commuting options. One of the most efficient is bus service operated by the Potomac Rapid Transit Company.

The company provides 4 levels of srevice.  Unless you are as familiar with Prince William County as I am (a 22 year resident) you may not be aware of the depth of service provided by this firm.

Omniride  This commuter service operates to the Pentagon and Washington, D.C.  There is inbound service from commuter parking lots in the morning and return service in the afternoon and early evening.

Omnilink  There are major work and shopping centers throughout the Woodbridge aree and Omnilink fulfills this local service need.

Omnimatch  There are work centers in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. that are not accessible by Omniride commuter service.  Omnimatch is a free service provided by PRTC that makes it possible for carpool users to link with each other and facilitates their joining forces

Metrodirect  This is a relatively new PRTC service that provides direct morning service to the Franconia-Springfield metro station station. Working late?  Metrodirect provides sevice from the Franconia-Springfield metro station to Woodbridge as late as 10:30 PM.

Part 1 of this series discussed Slugging as an extremely popular commuting option.  It and bus service are but 2 of the 4 solutions to commuting that make Woodbridge and Prince William County an extremely desireable location for military families when commuting to the Pentagon and other military sites are necessary.  Future posts will cover rail and carpooling options.

One of the most misunderstood forms of commuting into the Pentagon and Washington, DC is SLUGGING. 

 The most comprehensive definition of slugging can be found on the slugging website - " Slugging is a term used to describe a unique form of commuting found in the Washington, DC area sometimes referred to as "Instant Carpooling" or "Casual Carpooling".   It's unique because people commuting into the city stop to pickup other passengers even though they are total strangers! However, slugging is a very organized system with its own set of rules, proper etiquette, and specific pickup and drop-off points"

Not all slug locations offer service to all of the inbound destinations.  See Slug Line Locations to find the location where you can park and catch a ride to your destination.  There are 4 advantages to slugging.

• reduced commuting time via HOV lanes
• parking is free
• slugging is free
• reduced gasoline expense

Of course, Marine Corps Base Quantico is within 30 minutes of Woodbridge
