BUS - A MAJOR PLAYER IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA TRANSPORTATION

Every day thousands of Northern Virginians
use   TRAINS     METRORAIL   and   CARPOOLS
to commute to work.

Since these systems are modern, efficient, well maintained and cost effective they enjoy continued growth.

Virginia Railway Express, METRORAIL and Carpools are not always easily accessible to commuters and they most certainly are  not practical for intracity travel

HERE COMES THE BUS !!!!  We have numerous buslines meeting the needs of commuters and those needing  "around town" service.

METROBUS

Service throughout Fairfax County, City of Alexandria, Arlington County and City of Falls Church.  There is both rush hour commuter service and all day local service.  See the METROBUS SITE for schedules and maps.
In Fairfax County the service is available in such locations as Alexandria, Franconia, Mount Vernon, Lorton, Falls Church, Mc Lean, Reston, Fairfax, Springfield, Centreville, Chantilly and Vienna.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY

OMNIRIDE is the bus service for commuters travelling inbound to the Pentagon and Washington, D.C.
OMNILINK is the service for local travel in both the eastern and western sections of Prince William County including cross county service.

FAIRFAX COUNTY

COUNTY WIDE  The FAIRFAX CONNECTOR provides both commuter and local service throughout Fairfax County and to METRORAIL.

SPRINGFIELD  The Springfield Business District encompasses the area from Springfield Plaza to Springfield Mall and all the other shopping centers in between.  When you shop in this area it would be much easier if you used the Springfield bus system that moved you quickly and effortlessly from one Springfield shopping center to another.  Try taking TAGS - it works very well.

RESTON  There is LINK that enables Reston residents to connect with the FAIRFAX CONNECTOR at the Reston Town Center Transit Station.

CITY OF ALEXANDRIA

Alexandria has an outstanding intracity bus system, DASH, providing service throughout Alexandria with service to the Van Dorn St, Eisenhower Ave, Braddock Rd, King St and Pentagon Metro Stations.

ARLINGTON COUNTY

Similar to other jurisdictions throughout Northern Virginia Arlington County operates ART that serves both commuters and provides "around town" service.

The Columbia Pike Corridor is served by PIKE RIDE, a joint service venture of ART and Metrobus

CITY OF FAIRFAX

CUE provides service within the City of Fairfax and to the Vienna Metrorail Station.  It is also used extensively by the students at GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY

CITY OF FALLS CHURCH

GEORGE is the Falls Church bus system that provides local service as well as service the East Falls Church and West Falls Church Metro Stations

SPRINGFIELD AIRPORT - PROGRESS RAN OVER THE RUNWAY

This is the 5th in my series of reports on extinct Northern Virginia airports

At the end of World War II Carl Allen opened the Springfield Airport with a 2,200 foot unpaved runway.  In addition to providing refueling and other services he planned to open a flying school to serve the postwar interest in flying by veterans under the GI Bill.

One of the mechanics at the airport was Charlie Kulp, The Flying Farmer of BEALETON VIRGINIA FLYING CIRCUS fame.  At age 82 he flew his last barnstorming flight in 2007.

The owner and his wife were killed in an airplane crash in 1951 and the airport was closed.

Although the site borders 1-95 and the Capital Beltway neither of those roads existed in 1951 - President Eisenhower didn't sign the bill authorizing the Interstate Highway System until 1956.

Today, the land is home to the one level ramblers of Springfield Estates.

You may want to visit ABANDONED AND LITTLE KNOWN AIRPORTS - it has information regarding extinct aifields in all 50 states.

CROSSROADS AIRPORT - IT ACHIEVED A "HIGHER" USE

This is the 4th in my series on extinct Northern Virginia Airfields.

In 1941 E.C. Germain purchased a 350 acre site along Route 7 just east of Bailey's Crossroad.  He operated the Washington Air Charter Service and planned a 3,500 foot unpaved runway.

The airport began to achieve greater commercial success when it was purchased by the Benn brothers in 1946.  They opened a flight training school for GI's wanting to learn to fly using their GI Bill benefits.  Eventually, the name was changed to Washington-Virginia Airport.

The Goodyear blimp moored at the aiport when it visited the National Capital Area.  Additionally, planes that were modified to represent Japanese Zeros for the filming of the movie "Tora-Tora" passed through the facility.

When BEACON FIELD closed in 1960 many of its' planes moved to Falls Church and Washington-Virginia Airport.  It was not uncommon for air frame manufacturers wanting to do business with the Pentagon to use the airfield to display their product.

By 1968 the encroaching development and the age of the Benn brothers convinced the family to sell the property for 9 million dollars, not a bad return on an initial investment of approximately $350,000.

Today, that land is the site of the highrise Skyline residential and office complex along the Leesburg Pike.

In more than 20 years of operation there was never a fatal crash at the airport.   When the Skyline complex was started in the 1970's one of the initial buildings collapsed killing 35 construction workers.

GEORGE WASHINGTON AIR JUNCTION - A GIGANTIC FLOP

Henry Woodhouse purchased 1,500 acres of dairyland in Hybla Valley during the 1920's.

It was his objective to build the largest transatlantic commercial airport in the National Capital Area.  There were three runways with the largest being 7.200 feet long as well as moorings for Zeppelins.

Howver, the airport never received the necessary approvals - there is no record of any takeoffs or landings during its' operation.

The land was leased to dairy farmers until 1950 when the Virginia National Guard established an anti-aircraft battery in defense of Washington, D.C. on the site which operated until 1959.

In 1975 the land was sold to Fairfax County for $1.00.  It is now HUNTLEY MEADOWS PARK, a major wetlands preserve with over 200 species of birds.  The picture at the upper right is a current day view of the park.

EXPLOSIVE TRAINING SCHEDULED AT MCB QUANTICO

This morning's edition of the Potomac News and Manassas Journal-Messenger notified the public that Marines at Marine Corps Base Quantico will be doing explosive training.  It will be a five day exercise from February 25 to February 29 during the hours of 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Since our windows are closed at this time of the year the impact will be minimal, but you may experience some very minor vibration.  If the wind blows to the east the blast will be disbursed out over the Potomac River and hardly noticed.

While some may grumble, I welcome the training that prepares our military to further protect us from forces and ideologies that are intent on harming America.

WHERE DID THE WOODBRIDGE AIRPORT GO?

The Woodbridge Airport opened for business in 1959.  At the time it was in the "middle of nowhere" on the north side of Old Bridge Road just east of Smoketown Road.

It was considered a difficult airport since there were trees at either end of the 2,246' runway with a substantial dip in the middle.  Many pilot instructors would not let their students attempt a landing.

Over time suburbia encroached with the development of Lake Ridge, Westridge and Old Bridge Estates.  There were many times when I would be showing homes in the area and as I was passing the airport a small plane on takeoff would seem like it barely cleared the roof of my car.  Since the runway was perpendicular to Old Bridge Road, I could see them accelerating in my direction.

At the time of its' closing in 1987 there were approximately 113 small aircraft using the airport.  Most of them relocated to Manassas or Stafford facilities.

Today, similar to Beacon Mall in Fairfax County, the airport site is home to The Festival at Old Bridge.

The road in the foreground of the shopping center photo at the right is Old Bridge Road and the street at the lower left is Smoketown Road.

BEACON FIELD AIRPORT IS NOW BEACON MALL SHOPPING CENTER

In all the years we lived in Mount Vernon and shopped at Beacon Mall I wondered where the name originated.

The original 74 acre tract was purchased by an Alexandria businessman in the 18th century.  It changed hands over time and became the site of City View, an impressive 19th century estate.

The site (elevation 249 feet) was an ideal location for an airfield which was developed in the 1920's.  Originally, it was used by private pilots and the US Mail Service.

During Woeld War II it saw service as a training school for naval aviation cadets as well as the Womens Air Force Service Pilots (WASP) that ferried planes to relieve male pilots for combat duty.

Once the war was over an accredited flight school was opened to provide pilot training under the G.I. Bill

Finally, the airport closed in 1959 to make way for Beacon Mall Center.

FORT HUNT PARK ALIVE AND WELL IN MOUNT VERNON VA

Fort Hunt (Sheridan's Point in Washington's Day) served as a fort to defend the settlers against Indians in the 17th century.

In the latter part of the 19th century gun batteries were installed to defend Washington, D.C. during the Spanish American War along with Fort Washington in Maryland.

It served for a brief time as an ROTC training camp for African Americans as well a temporary Veteran's Administration Hospital.

During World War II Fort Hunt was known as P.O. Box 1142, the secret POW camp that housed and interrogated over 4,000 German prisoners.  Interestingly, most of the American interrogators were refugees from Nazi Germany.

Today, all but two of the old buildings have been razed and the acreage has been converted to an extremely popular picnic destination along the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

GIVING BACK TO SPRINGFIELD THROUGH MY COMMUNITY SERVICE

Over the past 31 years the Springfield area has been a primary source of real estate business for my husband and me.  The reason I became a West Springfield Rotarian is easy to understand - Rotary International is renowned worldwide for the members service to their community as well as to international projects such as the eradication of polio

The Rotary Club of West Springfield, chartered on April 9, 1980, was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Springfield. It was first known as the Springfield Breakfast Rotary Club and met at the Springfield Howard Johnson. Meetings were moved to the Hunter Motel in 1982 and then to the Springfield Golf and Country Club in 1984. In 1996 the name was changed to The Rotary Club of West Springfield. Four charter members, Kelly Perdue, Doug Alcorn, Roger Applegate and Bob Hamlin are still actively involved. Early on, at each meeting, Kelly took a carnation from the table and presented it to a member or guest he felt had distinguished themselves. Today, Kelly still presents a carnation every week, but this has now evolved to a long-lasting carnation pin, hence the carnation on our logo.

Three major fund raisers are held each year. Our Reverse Raffle takes place during the winter, the Golf Tournament in the summer/fall, and the Bowl-A-Thon in the fall. Proceeds from the recent Bowl-A-Thon purchased three Shelter Boxes and a contribution of $1,000 to pancreatic cancer research in honor of one of our Past Presidents who is currently fighting the disease. Proceeds from the other fund raisers provide student scholarships and outstanding teacher awards, purchase of equipment for Camelot Center for hearing impaired children, supply dictionaries to third graders in our schools as part of the Dictionary Project and provide funds to assist the Friends of Barnabas medical/dental mission to Honduras. We have just started teaming with the Rotaract Club of Christopher Newport University for their international service project, a literacy project in Costa Rica.

Locally, some of our hands-on community service project include: the reading program for hearing impaired children at Camelot Center, Mission of Mercy dental program which provides dental care for the financially disadvantaged, sponsoring an INOVA Blood Drive every other month, highway cleanup quarterly, assisting with Special Olympics, and Salvation Army Bell Ringing. A special project is Kristi's Christmas All Year Round established by Bill and Karen Brown who lost their daughter when her car was hit head on. To honor her for her involvement with needy children, each year approximately 50 children are selected from local elementary schools. They are provided with a wonderful breakfast, then taken to Target to shop for clothing for themselves with help from a high school "buddy." They also have a visit with Santa and leave with a large bag full of school supplies, personal hygiene items, a sleeping bag and a cuddly stuffed animal. It is a wonderful day for all involved.

The Rotary Club of West Springfield meets at the Springfield Golf and Country Club every Wednesday at 7:30 A.M.

Please call me at 703-690-6569 if you would like more information about our service activities and possible interest in joining with us to serve our community.

Springfield Fairfax County VA Real Estate (Shopping)

FULL SERVICE GAS STATION THRIVES IN MOUNT VERNON VA

There is only one gas station in the Fort Hunt section of Mount Vernon.  It is located in the Hollin Hall Shopping Center .

Yes, they pump your gas, wash the windows and check the oil and fluid levels.  Even though they are the only gas station in the Fort Hunt area their price per gallon of gasoline is competitive with others in the Mount Vernon area.

Why?  The shopping center and service station are at the main entrance to Hollin Hall Village, a community of one level ramblers that is very popular with senior citizens.

Also, at the time Hollin Hall Village was developed the Hollin Hall Elementary School was built about one block behind the service station.  As the demographics of the area changed and there was no longer a need for an elemantary school in the area it was converted to the Hollin Hall Senior Center which attracts "clients" from all over the Mount Vernon area.  Many of these people welcome the opportunity to have a full service gas station and car care center available while they enjoy the activities at the senior citizen center.

My husband and I have been working as a full time real estate team for 31 years.  We have assisted more than 1500 clients buy or sell real estate.  During that time we have been in more than 15,000 properties - that experience is put to work for you.  Since this is also our home we can brief you on the many interesting places and activities available throughout Northern Virginia.  Visit MY WEBSITE or CONTACT ME

Back To The Future at the Hollin Hall Shopping Center in Mount Vernon VA

The Hollin Hall Shopping Center located on Fort Hunt Road has survived handsomely since it was built in conjunction with Hollin Hall Village in the late 1940's and early 1950's.

The facade of the Safeway at the north end of the complex is typical of the architectural design of that period.

Although the Fort Hunt area of Mount Vernon is not an incorporated town, the Hollin Hall Shopping Center is about as close to a "downtown" as you can get.  It is two blocks long and has all of the neighborhood necessities - most of them have been there for years.

Over the years there have been several different pharmacies in tnis section of the center, but Rite Aid appears to be well established, albeit dated.

The Village Wharf, originally under the same ownership as The Wharf in Old Town Alexandria is a popular Fort Hunt eatery for both lunch and dinner. It receives satisfactory reviews fot its' crabcakes and crab soup - just like its' big brother in Alexandria.  I've had both and agree. Good crabcake reviews are important for a seafood restaurant in the National Capital Area.

Step into the Variety Store and you will be stepping back into the days of Woolworth's and Kresge's - it is aptly named.  The aisles are narrow and crowded, but there isn't much they do not have from seasonal items to fabrics, toys, kitchenware, cards, etc. - a real "five and dime".   My husband doesn't believe Christmas can happen until he visits the Variety Store for one of my stocking stuffers.

Kids Again has been in the shopping center for over 25 years - it is an extremely popular consignment shop - they take great care in assessing the merchandise they will accept.  Much of it is well known designer brands.

One of the most patronized stores is the Hollin Hall Pastry Shop.   I cannot describe it adequately, because everything they sell is "one of my favorites".

One of my husband's favorite activities is visiting what he calls "real hardware stores" and there is no finer example of that lost American phenomenon than the VILLAGE HARDWARE located in the shopping center.  It is in its' 28th year of operation.

The two most famous tourist attractions in the Mount Vernon area are MOUNT VERNON and WOODLAWN PLANTATION. However, a trip to the Hollin Hall Shopping Center will be time well spent.

6 PRESIDENTS + 3 RECESSIONS + 1500 CLIENTS + TECHNOLOGY = EXPERTISE

If you want to become licensed to sell real estate in Virginia all you have to do is complete a 60 hour course and pass a test..  However, that doesn't teach you HOW to sell real estate.

Some real estate firms have ongoing training programs to assist their new licensees, but many more do not. It takes time, continuing education and exposure to "real world situations".

It only stands to reason the more transactions a real estate agent is involved with the greater exposure they will have had to "real world situations"  Yes, my husband and I have sold real estate during the terms of 6 presidents and have weathered 3 recessions - that's a combined total of 62 full time years selling real estate to and for clients in both good and bad times.  Many agents have never been in a down market and are struggling to adjust to this downturn

We are both brokers (the highest level of licensure available in Virginia) and we have continued to hone our skills through regular attendance at seminars and highly specialized training courses.

In our continuing effort to improve our client  service we also employ the latest technology to market your home or assist you to purchase a home

NO REGISTRATION HOME SEARCH enables you to be connected to our MLS immediately without requiring you to sign in. Some real estate firms require a complete dossier before you can start your search.

ONLINE MARKETING

The majority of real estate agents will put a colorful brochure in the home and a sign in your front yard, but my sign is different - it has a rider directing prospects to SEEAVIRTUALTOUR.COM - there is a link to an online tour of 6512 Carriage Drive - I own that domain name

REALTOR.COM is probably the most visited real estate portal on the internet.  Here in Northern Virginia listings are automatically uploaded to the site.  However, we pay a premium to have our listings highlighted and given priority positioning VIEW THIS HOME

Additionally, we provide an ONLINE FLYER that I can email to other agents or to people who call and would like to view some details before making an appointment.

We even have OUR PLEDGE TO YOU online for you to review before we visit you to discuss OUR ACTION PLAN

My husband and I are proud of the fact that we continue to COMBINE EXPERIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY - it has taken us from President Ford to the present administration and through 3 recessions
