Having lived in Lake Ridge since 1982 we can attest to the positive factors about the Prince William County Public Schools.  Our son went through the system.  Also, we have numerous clients (military and civilian) who decided on a Lake Ridge home purchase because of the quality of the schools and the fact that children attend school in the subdivision

Not everyone wants to live in a mega townhome subdivision.  For those who prefer the neighborly atmosphere of a smaller community then Westwater Point is a Springfield location you should consider.  Built in the late 80's by the VanMetre Companies Westwater Point is a small enclave of 100 town homes set among hills about 1/2 mile west of Rolling Road with an entrance on the Fairfax County Parkway.  It has quick access to all major commuting routes, I-95, I-395 and I-495 (the Capital Beltway)

Commuting

• It is about a 15 minute drive to the Franconia-Springfield Metro Station.  Proximity to the Franconia-Springfiled Metro makes Westwater Point an ideal location for commuting to the Pentagon, Washington, DC and all work centers along the subway system

Schools and Library

• Children are in the West Springfield High School Pyramid.  However, it is best to locate schools for a specific home address at Fairfax County Public School Locator

• Two neighborhood shopping centers, Huntsman Square and Saratoga are approximately 10 minutes from Westwater Point

Recreation

• Audrey Moore Rec Center in Wakefield Park with its year round pool  and gymnasium plus a myriad of other sports and activities is within 15 minutes
• Wakefield Skate Park is also in Wakefield Park next to the Audrey Moore Rec Center
• South Run Rec Center with year round pool, exercise facilities and other activities is within approximately 10 minutes. It has a connecting trail to Burke Lake Park
• Burke Lake Park with golf course, camping, picnic areas, small boat rental, fishing, carousel, miniature train and ice cream parlor is approximately 15 mimutes
• Lake Accotink Park with small boat rental, fishing and picnic facilities is approximately 15 minutes.
• Pohick Bay Golf Course - an 18-hole public course is approximately 15 minutes
• Pohick Bay Park with boat launch to the Potomac River, camping and picnic facilities is approximately 15 minutes
• Laurel Hill Golf Course - 18-hole public is approximately 10 minutes

The Creative Preschool program has been operational for the past 15 years in Lake Ridge.  Jean Hoge, the program's director has been with the program from the beginning.

There are two programs offered

• Pre-K which is appropriate for children who will be attending kindergarten the following year meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday
• The Explorers was developed for children who are 3 years old, potty trained and ready to learn about a classroom environment

February 23 is the registration date for LRPRA members.  Open registration for non-members begins on March 2

• Pre-K fees for LRPRA members are $205.00 and $225.00 for non-members
• Explorer fees for LRPRA members are$255.00 and $275.00 for non-members

The prospect of snow is fun for some folks and brings fear to the hearts of others.  Whatever your position the fact remains that snow can play havoc with the ability to drive.

In Lake Ridge there are three separate policies and procedures regarding snow removal

Single Family Homes located on streets that were dedicated to the Virginia Department of Transportation should refer all plowing questions and requests to VDOT at 703-383-8368

Condominiums and Apartments should discuss service with their respective property management company

Town Homes are located on private roads owned by the Lake Ridge Parks and Recreation Association.  Snow plowing will be provided by a private contractor - Emery Snow Removal

• Snow Plowing will begin when two inches have fallen or at the discretion of association management
• Initial plowing will clear exits and entrances to the community and provide a single pathway for residents and to allow access for emergency vehicles
• Subsequent plowings will take place during the storm
• Final street plowing will occur when the storm has stopped
•  Sanding will be performed as needed after the storm or during ice storms.  Hills, intersections and curves will receive priority

Due to the magnitude of the task the association does not clear the many miles of common ground sidewalks.  Also, residents are asked to assist by keeping fire hydrants, mailboxes and storm sewers clear.

Newington Forest (over 1800 homes) is the largest subdivision in Springfield.  It is located in the southeastern corner of the Springfield area of Fairfax County.  Since construction began in the 70's and was completed in the 80's there are numerous features not to be found in many newer subdivisions

• Town homes with treed and grassy central areas for separation

There is an East Lake Ridge - so why isn't there a West Lake Ridge?  I don't know the answer, but Westridge is about as close as you can get to being West Lake Ridge.  It actually adjoins Lake Ridge in the Springwoods section.

Community Features

• Parents of young children love having the elementary school in the subdivision
• The club complex with pool, clubhouse, tennis courts and pond is an extremely attractive and much used facility

Between January 15, 2009 and February 12, 2009 the Lake Ridge Parks and Recreation Association will hold an  election to fill three openings on the Board of Directors.

In many communities this is a "ho-hum" process, but not so in Lake Ridge.  Why?  Lake Ridge is one of the ten largest subdivisions in the United States.

• More than 7,000 residences
• Approximately 38,000 residents

Lake Ridge is only 3,000 residents smaller than Charlottesville, Virginia (41,000 residents) 

Is it any less important for "Lake Ridgers" to vote than it is for the citizens of the City of Charlottesville?  Of course not when you realize the actions of the BOD have an impact on both the Lake Ridge lifestyle and the value of your property.

Why is Lake Ridge so popular with military clients? Since they relocate regularly they prefer a community where their investment will be more secure.  Of course, there are other factors that encourage home ownership for both military personnel and civilians.

Deer and Red Foxes play.  Red foxes?  Absolutely!!

According to Sally Vincent, Lake Ridge Communications Director, "Lake Ridge is a beautiful community with an abundance of wooded areas, creeks, and grassy fields interspersed between clusters of neighboring homes; the fox is one species of wildlife that shares this natural setting."

As a 26 year Lake Ridge resident I can attest to the fact that red and gray foxes live in Lake Ridge.  Foxes are nocturnal, but we've seen them on occasion late of a summer evening in the woods behind our home.

Yes, we see the deer as well - they love our hostas and drink from our ground level bird baths.

Lake Ridge has 1,200 acres of common area and a very long shoreline with the 2,100 acre Occoquan Reservoir.  With foxes, deer, raccoons, squirrels, possum, chipmunks, skunks, turtles, rabbits, frogs, toads and a wide variety of birds it is a veritable zoo.

The 45 piece Old Bridge Chamber Orchestra and 45 member New Dominion Choraliers set the window walls of Covenant Presbyterian Church 0n Hoadly Road in motion on Saturday evening December 20, 2008.  The church sanctuary was the setting for a holiday concert that featured both organizations singing and playing time honored Christmas music that included

Recently, my husband wrote a comprehensive post about Lake Ridge, Virginia.  He pointed out that although Lake Ridge is a subdivision it has all the ingredients of a small American town.  One of those features is that we have a post office (it's an annex in an office supply store)

Yesterday, our in-home office phone rang and, when Arthur answered it, a gentleman inquired if this was the postal annex.  Of course, Arthur told him it was Karen Kruschka's real estate office and not the postal annex.  To make a long story short he saw the Lake Ridge post, noted the postal annex comment and called our phone number to find the price of a first class stamp

Arthur told him he was in luck because he could give him the price of a first class stamp and also assist him or anyone he knows with any real estate matters.  Unfortunately, he had no real estate plans, but was impressed about the thoroughness of our Lake Ridge knowledge and the price of the stamp - $.42 for the first ounce :)

Ever since Hurricane Katrina the Covenant Presbyterian Church at 5640 Hoadly Road has sent a team of church members to the affected areas to assist with the repair and reconstruction of individual homes.  Since the trips last a week it is necessary for members who participate to be away from their work or business for an extended period of time.  Proceeds from the tree sales are used to purchase construction materials - participants pay for their personal travel expenses

The trees are being sold in the church parking lot which is about two blocks south of the Shops at County Center (Harris Teeter).

This past Sunday my husband and I had occasion to revisit the National Museum of the Marine Corps located on US1 just south of the Joplin Road entrance to MCB Quantico.

This World War 1 vintage truck was in the lobby serving as one of the Prince William County Toys For Tots dropoff points

As you may know, the Marine Corps League conducts this campaign for needy children each year.  You can go to the Toys For Tots site and easily find the dropoff points for any location in the United States.  You can even donate online.
