Cardinal Forest is one of the most popular communities in Springfield.  It was developed in the days when builders didn't bulldoze down all of the trees and those that homeowners have planted are mature.  There are more than 725 homes throughout the area.

West Springfield High School is just outside the community on Rolling Road and Pohick Regional Library is approximately 15 minutes away.

Metrobus 18G Pentagon Express passes through the subdivision on Forrester Boulevard and Carrleigh Parkway on its' short trip to the HOV lanes on I-395.

There are two excellent neighborhood shopping centers at Rolling and Old Keene Mill Roads - they are Cardinal Forest Plaza and Old Keene Mill Center.

South Run Rec Center with its' year round pool, exercise facilities and other activities is approximately 15 minutes from Cardinal Forest.  In the summertime you can enjoy the benefits of nearby Lake Accotink

Cardinal Forest Condominiums are located between Rolling Road and Carrleigh Parkway and Forrester Boulevard.  There are more than 1,000 units featuring brick construction.

Some of them are two level town homes with either 2 or 3 bedrooms.  Others are garden apartments with either 1 or 2 bedrooms 

The community has a pool and is very well maintained with on site management.  Shopping is nearby at either Cardinal Forest Plaza or Old Keene Mill Center at Old Keene Mill and Rolling Roads.

Metrobus Route 18G Exporess Service to the Pentagon Metro Station operates on Forrester Boulevard

Belle View is a very similar community in eastern Fairfax County along the George Washington Parkway.

Inlet Cove is surrounded by Fort Belvoir except along its' frontage on US1 (Richmond Highway).  Its' postal address is Fort Belvoir, VA 22060.  There are 255 homes in the five year old community - both town homes and detached homes.

It is about a 10 minute drive to Fort Belvoir entrances.  A short southerly drive on US1 brings you to the Virginia Railway Express Lorton Station where you can also connect with a Slug Line or take Fairfax County Connector Bus Route 171  to the Huntington Metro.

The subdivision is in the Hayfield Secondary School Pyramid.  Lorton Library is approximately two miles south on US1

Gunston Plaza is the closest shopping center (about 1 mile south on US1), but Lorton Town Center (about 1/2 mile farther south on Lorton Road) is a much larger complex with restaurants and cafes.

Pohick Bay Regional Park is approximately 20 minutes away and offers camping, swimming, golf, boat ramp and small boat rental.

Built in the late 80's by the VanMetre Companies Westwater Point is a small enclave of 100 town homes.  It is set among hills about 1/2 mile west of Rolling Road with an entrance on the Fairfax County Parkway.  It has quick access to all major commuting routes, I-95, I-395 and I-495 (the Capital Beltway)

From that location it is about a 15 minute drive to the Franconia-Springfield Metro Station.  It is in the West Springfield High School Pyramid and approximately 15 minutes from the Pohick Regional Library

Daventry (Hunter Village) is located between Old Keene Mill Road and Rolling Road where it intersects with the Fairfax County Parkway.  It is one of the most easily accessible subdivisions in Springfield and, for that reason, it is very attractive to people working at the PENTAGON or WASHINGTON, DC.

Rhygate ia a community of 100 townhomes located on Rolling Road just south of Old Keene Mill Road - it adjoins Springfield Golf and Country Club.  The homes were built in the mid 1970's.  They are all brick and some of them have a garage.

The community is immaculate and very well groomed.  Homes have been selling in the $500,000 price range.

Shopping is a snap since there are two very large neighborhood shopping centers at Rolling and Old Keene Mill Roads.

The Oaklands homes are approximately 5 years old.  They are off Hoadly Road about halfway between The Prince William County Parkway and Dale Boulevard.

There are both one and two car models on 7,000 square foot lots. They are either three or four bedrooms homes with anywhere from 2 to 3.5 baths.  The Good News for First Time Buyers is that they currently sell in the $350,000 price range.  NOTE there are sidewalks on both sides of the street and concrete driveways.

Kings Park is located just west of the Capital Beltway (I-495) off Braddock Road.  It is a Richmarr community with slightly over 1100 homes that were built in the 60's.

There are five basic models - two colonials, one split foyer, one cape cod and one rambler.  The rambler (Prince) is an extremely popular model and has over 2100 square feet on two levels.

George Mason University is a few miles west on Braddock Road.

Kings Park is in the Lake Braddock High School Pyramid

Currently, Kings Park homes are selling for approximately $450,000

There are two outstanding family recreational facilities very close to Kings Park.

LAKE ACCOTINK PARK  Its' 493 acres include a 55-acre lake with boating, fishing, hiking, miniature golf, a carousel, snack bar, tourboat rides, trails, picnic areas and playgrounds. Boats powered by electric motors, sailboats under 15 feet and kayaks are allowed on the lake. Swimming and windsurfing are prohibited.

Directions from KINGS PARK to LAKE ACCOTINK  East on Braddock Road, right on Queensberry, right on Heming to park entrance

Villamay is a community of 240 homes between the George Washington Parkway and Fort Hunt Road in the Mount Vernon section of Fairfax County.  They were built by Gene May in the 1960's. 

Gene will be remembered for numerous real estate projects in the Washington area, but most notably Villamay in Mount Vernon and Evermay in McLean.  The homes are highly customized and are all brick.

Villamay homes are currently priced in the $900,000 range.

The Fairfax County Connector  operates on Fort Hunt Road with service to the Huntington Metro

It is approximately 15 minutes to the Capital Beltway at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. 

The Mount Vernon Rec Center with YEAR ROUND POOL AND ICE RINK PLUS EXERCISE FACILITIES is within 10 minutes as is the MARTHA WASHINGTON LIBRARY.  There is an exit to Villamay on the George Washington Parkway.

Shopping is equally close at the BelleView Shopping Center. 

When it comes to quality and convenience in the Mount Vernon section of Fairfax County Villamay has to be among the leaders.

The finished living area averages 3,000 to 3,400 square feet.

The homes are within 15 minutes of the commuter parking lots on The Prince William County Parkway at I-95 where you can board Commuter Buses or join the Slug Lines

There are three large shopping centers within 5 minutes.

These homes are very convenient if you are being assigned to Marine Corps Base Quantico

Of course it does.  This morning the alarm went off at 4:45 (We rise early and start our day at the gym). 

I turned on the local news - school closings were scrolling across the bottom of the screen.  It hadn't even started to snow yet.  Our part of the National Capital Area was forecast to receive 1 to 2 inches.  As you can see by the picture of our deck this could hardly be called a record snowfall.

Arthur and I have lived in northern tier states where they only close school if they can't find the school bus.

The problem here is that we have several varieties of driver.

The Invincibles  These are the guys with a modified pickup trucks that look like Giant Tonka Toys.  They pass you at breakneck speed throwing slush or snow all over your windshield.  It is not at all unusual to find them in a ditch on the side of the road about a mile up the road.  Honk as you pass them.

The Equatorials  Due to the fact this is our nation's capital we have a great many foreign visitors that come from countries where they grow bananas, pineapples and guava.  We pray for these folks as they have absolutely no idea what is about to happen when they apply the brakes.

The Governmentals  They have the option to take unscheduled leave.  This way they don't have to worry about being stuck in a traffic jam on the way home during the evening rush hour.  However, they use the time to go to the malls and foul up traffic anyway.

The Supermarket Rushers.  These folks will travel to three or four supermarkets to purchase a three week supply of toilet paper, bread and milk.

The interesting aspect of all this is that the forecast for tomorrow is sunny and 46 degrees. 

Hollin Hall Village is just that - a village of 580 homes off Fort Hunt Road.  Although the homes are 50+ years old they are solidly built one level ramblers and continue to be extremely popular.  The picture below is representative of how the original homes looked, but many of them have had additions.

They are within walking distance of the Hollin Hall Shopping Center which is the only shopping center in the Fort Hunt Area. Fairfax County Connector Bus to the Huntington Metro operates on Fort Hunt Road.

Homes most recently have sold for $450,000.
